Tony Jones Withdraws from BU Coaching Search

After a few days of articles by Mark Blaudschun in the Boston Globe saying it appeared to be a done deal, Tennessee assistant Tony Jones will not be BU's next head coach. Jones withdrew his name from consideration today. His statement to the Knoxville News-Sentinel:
“With the commitment the University of Tennessee has shown to the men's program, I feel it's in my best interests to remain a part of Bruce Pearl's staff,'' Jones said. “After long and thoughtful consideration, I've decided Boston wasn't the right fit for me at this point in my career.''
Hmm, this might have something to do with Memphis' failed pursuit of Tennessee's head coach, Bruce Pearl, and the pay raise Pearl was able to finagle because of it. An AP report in the Memphis Commerical Appeal said that Pearl "is expected to ask for a larger assistant coaching salary pool." A pay raise for Jones is probably his reason for staying - maybe UT is giving him more as an assistant than BU was offering as head coach.

Jones did the same thing -- withdraw after doing interviews -- when he was considered for the Tennessee State job.

The question is: where does BU turn now? And how does Blaudschun regain some credibility after being wrong on so much of this coaching search? Blaudschun is now flogging Villanova assistant Patrick Chambers (while still clinging to Jones as the frontrunner)... more on Chambers later today.

Tom Herrion should be the new coach. He wants the job and is the most qualified. If they select an assistant coach the program will take a giant step backward.

I'm not sure I would say hiring an assistant would be a huge step back, but Herrion is a good option seeing as he was a successful head coach. I have learned one thing with this search though: Any candidate whose name comes up in a Blaudschun article can automatically be eliminated as being the next coach. How much credibility does this guy have?

Blaudschun has no credibility.
He thinks he is a king-maker, when the reality is that he is just a pawn of basketball pimps like Rick Pitino.
I'm glad that he's throwing names out there, because it is entertaining.
What ever happened to Richard Pitino Jr.? The sure thing?!?
Or Walter McCarty?
Or andre LaFleur?
Or any assistant with a head coach that can chat up Blaudschun about getting their proteges some name recognition?

What's Roy Sigler up to these days? Does he have a kid that wants to coach?
How's about ol' Charlie Luce? Still kickin' around somewhere in Connecticut?

The funny thing would be if the new coach ended up someone that Blaudschun has never mentioned.

Isn't Bentley's Jay Lawson a more successful coach than Tom Herrion was at the same level?

Would his hiring guarantee our continued success over UNH and ex-BU assistant (under Jarvis) Billy Herrion?

Blaudschun's today's 'he's the guy' is Chambers. Yesterday it was Jones. And we've also had Pitino Jr., McCarty, LaFleur.
Maybe Herrion will be next, but Blaudschun will need to flip a coin to decide if it is Tom or Billy?
Maybe BU will hire a coach before the NY Times shutters the Globe or Blaudschun runs out of nice.

Blaudschun is a complete dope with no credibility in college basketball circles. Please stop writing about him. Nobody cares what he says. The guy can't fart after a baked beans dinner.

What has this guy at Nova even accomplished? Ridden Jay Wright's (designer) coattails?

cnnsi.com is reporting that it is indeed Chambers.

SI: BU Basketball hires Villanova assistant coach Pat Chambers.

I like it. He's young (37) and competes in a league where nova's facilities are substandard to most of the conference. Their recruiting classes are always outstanding and they are never outhustled on the trail.

Great to have an assistant from a final four team take over, but weird since Jay Wright blasted BU the other day for canning Dennis Wolf.

Anyone care to explain why hiring an assistant coach is such a bad idea and how the "program will take a giant step backward"?

O'Brien and Munoz are gone

At 6:58 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Gone for sure? Fine, let O'Brien ride the bench at a bigger school, I think no matter who they would have hired O'Brien would have potentially been gone

At 9:05 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why would O'Brien be gone before he even knows who the new coach is, and what his plans are?
Is O'Brien a nephew of Wolff? Because other than that, I see no reason why he'd go.

I'd make anyone sit out a transfer year that decides to go BEFORE they learn who the new coach is going to be. That includes incoming freshmen that have signed letters of intent.

Didn't they hire a new coach earlier this week?
Why no updates, now that the deal has been done???

o'brien is gone for sure. Munoz is still committed

Munoz has obtained his release.

Why are you telling us Munoz is gone? Why do we care? Are we supposed to second guess the firing of Wolff because some unproven mid-major prospect doesn't approve of the new hire? I don't care who else leaves - let the loser mentality Wolff devotees forego their 45k annual scholarship - clean house and get the program back on track if need be.

We don't need anymore updates on O'Brien and Munoz. Thank you.

Could we have some updates, please?

We've got a new coach, and players going, and maybe coming, and lead story is about Flash Tony Jones staying in Tennessee.

This wouldn't happen on the hockey blog!
